How our flag defines Canada?
On the day our new flag was raised, Maurice Bourget (Speaker of the Senate) spoke about our flag: "The flag is a symbol of the nation's unity, for it, beyond any doubt, represents all the citizens of Canada without distinction of race, language, belief or opinion.
Canada needed a flag after gaining independence, and many Canadians were involved in the debate and expressed ideas towards a new flag. On the day that our flag was raised, the entire crowd at Parliament Hill sang our national anthem to show how proud we were as a country to have a flag. The Maple Leaf on the flag quickly became a powerful Canadian symbol, showing how much Canada had changed in a single generation. The flag would be something that could always represent Canada, and they finally had something to unify the country as a whole. It does not matter who you are, but as long as you are Canadian you are represented by our wonderful flag.
